I think most of the time we think of idol worship we think of Buddha, or statues and kneeling before a stone god – reciting words over and over again; or maybe having a very disturbing obsessesion over someone. Yes, these are all idol worship, but usually idol worship isn’t so obvious.
A while ago I put on a Christian playlist I found on Spotify (a great way to find new artists by the way!) and a song by Jimmy Needham called Clear The Stage started playing in the background. It’s a really chill song so I didn’t take much notice at first, until he got to the bridge – it really caught my attention and I kept saying “wow!”. Here are the lyrics:
Anything I put before my God is an idol
Anything I want with all my heart is an idol
Anything I can’t stop thinking of is an idol
Anything that I give all my love is an idol
I’m at a stage in my life where I’ve got an abundance of dreams and exciting opportunities laid out before me. Sure thing they will glorify God and can be used to point others to Him – but I had become obsessed. I had one particular dream that had consumed my mind to the point where it was literally life or death – I felt like giving everything up in case I couldn’t handle the disappointment. I loved this thing with all my heart; I couldn’t stop thinking about it, breathing it and talking about it.
Something that I had once dreamed about with God, had now taken over and put Him in second place.
However, God commands us to put Him first:
“And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’” Matthew 22:37
“And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’” Mark 12:30
Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con todas tus fuerzas. Deuteronomio 6:5 (Español)
Who or what is most important to me?
Who or what can I not live without?
Who or what do I love with all my heart?
Who or what am I constantly thinking about?
Who or what do I give all my time and affection?
If God is not the answer to these questions, repent and ask for Grace. God is not egoistic, He commands us to love Him first and foremost for our own good. God knows that nothing else can really satisfy us except Him, nothing fulfils us like He does! He is the only one who can quench our soul’s thirst. All these other things will ultimately bring anxiety, frustration, pride, depression, loneliness etc, all of which will lead to our destruction. We must focus on Him and everything else will fall into place – He has got great plans for you, trust and believe Him.
For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things. Psalm 107:9
I am thinking of doing another post where I go more in depth on this topic – if this is something you’d be interested in, please let me know 🙂
